What is a DUI License Plate?

A DUI license plate, sometimes called a Whiskey Plate, is a special license plate required for people with certain DUI convictions. In some cases, the license plate will have an extra character. In others, the license plate will be a totally different design.

What States Use DUI License Plates?

Currently, only a few states use special DUI license plates.

These are:

  • Ohio
  • Minnesota
  • Georgia

Each of these states has different guidelines for when the driver must use these specific plates. Other states allow drivers with DUI convictions to keep the standard plates.

What is the Point of a DUI License Plate?

The primary point of a DUI license plate is to alert police officers that the driver has a past record of DUI. Inherently through the use of the plates, the general public will also be aware of the driver’s DUI record.

This can make drivers using the plates feel on edge or embarrassed, as that part of their record is visible to everyone else on the road.

Will Florida Use DUI Plates?

There is currently no indication that Florida will switch to using special plates for DUI offenders. While Florida drivers may not have to worry about this DUI consequence, they should remember that there are still numerous ways a DUI can affect their life.

Some effects include:

  • Jail time
  • Fines
  • Probation
  • License suspension
  • Difficulty holding certain jobs or working in certain fields
  • Damage to reputation
